God’s Provision, God’s Rest

Some weeks back, I heard someone say, “It’s possible to experience God’s provision, without knowing His rest.”
This became a reality for me over the past few weeks.
As many of you know, my wife and I recently had a little girl, our second child, Holland.  Post-pregnancy can be a tough time, physically trying for the mother and exhausting for the father–me :).  I was able to take two weeks off work, which was a huge blessing.  The first week was the “honeymoon week” for me; getting to enjoy the baby, plus a refreshing time of gifts, love and visits from family and friends.  We were, and continue to be immensely blessed with things we need and want for Holli.
The second of the two weeks, however, began to wear on me.  I began to (as a man naturally does) need some sort of structure to my day, some “defined vision and purpose,” and soon i became burnt out on the lack thereof.  As often happens when I lose my purpose and hope–I began to look for it through sexual gratification apart from my wife.  I struggled for days–right smack dab in the middle of flourishing “good things” that I and my family were involved in…in the middle of much “provision.”
My point is, we can often, and do often experience so much of God’s provision for us, while at the same time, live completely unaware of the rest that’s found in knowing Him. Like I said before, I sought fulfillment in immorality because I lost my vision–I lost the reason I was made, to filter my need through God’s faithful love and affection for me in Christ.

The writer of Hebrews (4:11) says to be diligent to enter that rest so that no one will fall.  There is no authentic and lasting rest other than knowing Jesus and what God’s done for us through Him–because He, as God, became human and understands.  As it says a few verses later, He can sympathize with us, and be with us in our time of need.
One thing I’m learning right now, is to rely fully on Jesus to fill my need.  I’m talking about FULLY. Whatever the need is.  The true needs of our lives are often unseen.  They’re not obvious to others.  Others see the results of barren spots in our heart through our attitude, disposition toward life, and struggles we decide to share…but Jesus knows our root needs–our true needs, and he wants to meet them.  Every one of them.  Ephesians 3:8 says that we have unfathomable riches in Christ.  That allows no exception to any good thing for you.  Will you open your heart in a new way to him today?  He is so longing for you.  He truly loves you.
